The $200 tax stamp on suppressors, short-barreled rifles (SBRs), and short-barreled shotguns (SBSs) is gone. As of January 1, 2026, the One Big Beautiful Bill eliminated the fee entirely — meaning NFA items just got significantly more accessible. Here at Gallenson’s, we’ve been selling suppressors and NFA items since before most gun shops existed, and we’re a proud Silencer Shop authorized dealer. This is everything you need to know to walk out with one.

What Is an NFA Item?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates a specific class of firearms and accessories that require federal registration and ATF approval before transfer. The items most relevant to you as a buyer at Gallenson’s are:

  • Suppressors (silencers) — reduce the sound signature of a firearm. Legal for civilian ownership in 42 states, including Utah.
  • Short-Barreled Rifles (SBRs) — rifles with a barrel under 16″ or overall length under 26″. Popular for home defense and compact builds.
  • Short-Barreled Shotguns (SBSs) — shotguns with a barrel under 18″ or overall length under 26″.
  • Any Other Weapons (AOWs) — a catch-all category including certain pistol configurations and similar items. Still require a $5 tax stamp.

Machine guns and destructive devices are still regulated with the $200 stamp and are subject to separate federal rules. This guide covers suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs only.

Is It Legal in Utah?

Yes. Utah is fully NFA-legal. Suppressors, SBRs, and SBSs are all legal to own and use in the state with proper ATF approval. Always verify current state and local laws before purchasing, as regulations can change.

What Changed: No More $200 Tax Stamp

Before January 1, 2026, every suppressor, SBR, and SBS transfer required a $200 federal excise tax — the “tax stamp.” That’s gone. The paperwork, background check, and ATF approval process still exist, but you no longer pay the fee. If you’ve been putting off buying a suppressor because of that $200, now is the time.

How It Works at Gallenson’s: The Silencer Shop Process

Gallenson’s is an authorized Silencer Shop dealer, which means the entire NFA paperwork and submission process runs through Silencer Shop’s platform — the most streamlined way to buy an NFA item available today. Here’s exactly how it works from start to finish.

Step 1: Create Your Accounts

Before anything else, you’ll need two accounts:

  • Silencer Shop account — create one free at silencershop.com
  • ATF eForms account — create one at eforms.atf.gov

Your full legal name and email must match exactly across both accounts. Write down your ATF eForms username, password, and PIN — you’ll need them at the kiosk.

Step 2: Visit the Silencer Shop Kiosk at Gallenson’s

We have a Silencer Shop kiosk in-store. This is a one-time visit that takes about 5 minutes and captures:

  • Electronic fingerprints
  • Your demographic information
  • Profile setup linked to your Silencer Shop account

Once done, it’s stored permanently in your Silencer Shop profile. You never have to do it again for future NFA purchases — even years down the road.

Step 3: Pick Your Item and Choose Individual or Trust

Browse our NFA inventory and select your suppressor, SBR, or SBS. Then decide how you want to register it:

  • Individual — faster approval (often 1–10 days via eForm). Registered to you personally. Only you may legally possess it.
  • NFA Trust — allows multiple people (spouse, family) to legally use the item. Slightly longer approval (~11–22 days). Better for households and long-term estate planning.

Not sure which to pick? Individual is simpler and fastest. Go trust if you want others in your household to have legal access.

Step 4: Upload Your Photo

Upload a passport-style photo to your Silencer Shop account — shoulders up, neutral background, no hats or sunglasses. This can be done online or through the Silencer Shop app before or after your kiosk visit.

Step 5: Silencer Shop Generates Your ATF Form 4

Once your kiosk visit and profile are complete, Silencer Shop automatically generates your ATF Form 4. No filling out paperwork by hand. No mistakes on forms. It’s done for you.

Step 6: “Ready to Certify” — Final Submission

You’ll receive an email from Silencer Shop with the subject line “Ready to Certify.” This is the final step before your application goes to the ATF. Contact us to set an appointment:

  • Trust or Corporation filings — can be completed remotely
  • Individual filings — must be completed in person at Gallenson’s

We submit electronically through the ATF eForms system for the fastest possible processing.

Step 7: Wait for ATF Approval

Your item stays with us until the ATF approves the transfer. With eForm 4, current 2026 approval times are:

  • Individual: averaging 1–10 days, sometimes same-day
  • Trust: averaging 11–22 days

The days of 9–12 month waits are over.

Step 8: Pick Up Your NFA Item

Once approved, we’ll reach out. Come in, complete final transfer paperwork, and take it home. Always keep your approved Form 4 with the item when transporting or using it — it’s your legal proof of registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a background check?

Yes. The $200 fee is gone, but the ATF background check, fingerprints, photo, and Form 4 are all still required. The process is the same — it just doesn’t cost $200 anymore.

Do I need a special license to own a suppressor?

No special license is required beyond passing the standard ATF background check and receiving your Form 4 approval. Most law-abiding adults who can legally purchase a firearm can also own a suppressor in Utah.

What caliber suppressor do I need?

It depends on your platform and use case. A .30 cal suppressor covers most rifle calibers. A 9mm suppressor works for most handgun calibers. Many suppressors are multi-caliber capable. Come in and we’ll match you to the right one for your setup.

Can I use my suppressor in other states?

You can travel with your registered suppressor to any state where suppressors are legal without additional paperwork. Suppressors are banned in 8 states (CA, DE, HI, IL, MA, NJ, NY, RI) — do not bring your suppressor into those states. Always carry your approved Form 4 when transporting an NFA item. Consult an attorney if you have questions about interstate travel with NFA items.

What if my application is denied?

If your Form 4 is denied, the item is returned to the dealer. Denials are typically related to disqualifying background check factors. If you believe a denial is in error, consult a qualified firearms attorney. Gallenson’s cannot provide legal advice on denials or appeals.

A Note on Out-of-State Shipments

If your NFA item is shipping to us from an out-of-state dealer or distributor, expect some additional processing time before your Form 4 clock even starts. Out-of-state transfers require an ATF Form 3 — a dealer-to-dealer transfer that must be approved before the item can ship to Gallenson’s and your Form 4 be submitted. Form 3 approvals are generally faster than Form 4s, but they do add time to the overall timeline. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process.
